Where Is My Ad Spend Going? Why Shopify Can't Tell You

Shopify shows you revenue. It doesn't show where your ad budget actually went. Here's why that gap is costing you money and how to fix it.

You open Shopify. Revenue looks solid. You check your ad accounts - Meta, Google, TikTok. The numbers are there. But nowhere in Shopify can you see what those ads actually cost you, what came back in refunds, what disappeared in fees. You're flying on revenue, not profit.

What Shopify Actually Tracks

Shopify tracks orders, revenue, and refunds. That's it on the money side. It has no connection to your ad platforms. It doesn't know you spent $3,200 on Meta ads last week. It doesn't know your Google campaign burned $800 with a 0.8x ROAS. It shows you the top line. Everything below that is your problem.

Where Your Ad Spend Actually Goes

When you run paid ads, the money flows like this:

  • You spend $X on Meta/Google/TikTok
  • Some of that spend generates orders (attributed)
  • Some generates orders that can't be tracked (unattributed - iOS14, direct traffic, view-through)
  • Some generates nothing

Shopify sees the orders. It never sees the spend. So when you look at your Shopify dashboard, you're seeing revenue generated partly by ads you paid for - but the cost of those ads is invisible.

The Attribution Problem Makes It Worse

Ad platforms report ROAS on attributed conversions only. If a customer saw your Meta ad, didn't click, then bought directly three days later - Meta doesn't count that order. Your real ROAS is lower than what Meta shows you.

BeProfit and similar tools have the same problem: they only pull in ad spend that's UTM-attributed. Unattributed spend gets ignored, making your profit look higher than it actually is.

What You Actually Need to Know

To know where your ad spend is going, you need one view that combines:

  • Total ad spend across all platforms (not just attributed)
  • Revenue from Shopify
  • Refunds
  • COGS
  • Shopify fees and shipping costs

That gives you real net profit. Not ROAS. Not revenue. What's actually left.

How to See the Full Picture

Shopsterra connects to your Shopify store via read-only OAuth and lets you manually input your ad spend per platform. The result is one number: real net profit after everything.

track your real profit

Your ad spend isn't lost. It's just invisible in the tools you're using. Once you can see it alongside your revenue, refunds, and fees in one place, the decisions get a lot clearer.
