The formula

Net profit = revenue − refunds − COGS − shipping − payment fees − ad spend − other costs.

Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ contribution margin before ads, where that margin is everything left after refunds, COGS, shipping, fees and other costs, divided by revenue. A 3x or 4x ROAS target means nothing until you know this number for your own store.

Two simplifications to know about: COGS is applied to revenue after refunds (so it assumes refunded items go back into stock), and fees are applied to gross revenue because they are rarely returned on refunds. If your store differs, the real figures will differ too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate profit on Shopify?
Start with revenue, subtract refunds, then subtract product cost (COGS), shipping you paid, payment processing fees, ad spend and other costs such as apps. What is left is net profit. Shopify's own reports stop at revenue, so the other lines have to come from your ad platforms, supplier invoices and payout reports.
What is the difference between revenue and profit on Shopify?
Revenue is the total your customers paid. Profit is what remains after every cost of earning that revenue. A store can show strong revenue and still lose money once ads, refunds, shipping and fees are counted.
What is break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS is the return on ad spend at which ads pay for themselves and no more. It equals 1 divided by your contribution margin before ads. If your margin before ads is 40 percent, break-even ROAS is 2.5x. Any ROAS below that loses money on the ads.
Are payment fees refunded when I refund an order?
Usually not in full. Processing fees are charged on the original sale and many gateways keep the fixed part when you refund. The calculator therefore applies fees to gross revenue, not to revenue after refunds. Check your own gateway's terms for the exact behaviour.
Does this calculator store or send my numbers?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
Why does my Shopify revenue not match my bank account?
Shopify revenue is a sales figure. Your bank account sees payouts after fees, minus refunds and chargebacks, and none of your ad spend, product or shipping costs appear in Shopify at all.
